Title
Fostering Professionalism in Higher Education

Abstract
Over recent years, there are increasing concerns whether higher education is ‘fit for purpose’ and that graduates may require additional or alternate skills to equip them for the future working force of tomorrow. Technological advances are likely to bring further disruption and there is a need for essential skills in digital fluency and global competencies e.g. cultural awareness, language and adaptability with importance of judgement, social perceptiveness, complex decision making skills, communication and the ability to manage people and resources. In more traditional fields e.g. law, medicine etc. there is also educational struggles on curriculum focus of scholarly research skills versus vocational skills to best equip students with professional attitudes, behaviour and/ or skills upon or after graduation.

This keynote session will take a scholarly approach to professionalism and training including conceptualization of professionalism and its components in higher education, with additional illustration from advances in the field of medical education.
